Andrew Twigg
Andrew is Associate Teaching Professor at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Design, where he teaches and advises on interaction design topics including digital systems, prototyping, design fundamentals, visual communication, design systems, AI-integrated design workflows and processes, and designing for collaboration,. He is also an independent designer focused on design and organizational strategy, user experience, user interface, and branding.
Prior to establishing Andrew Twigg Design Studio, LTD, he lived in Chicago where he worked at startups and in agencies on established and emerging consumer and business-to-business brand, design, and content strategy, digital design, and SEO.
Andrew is also pursuing a PhD in Transition Design, with a focus on improving collaboration and care through design. Andrew is developing frameworks for team performance: the first improves team formation using a multi-dimensional assessment of individual skills and skill development domains to understand and inform team composition; the second facilitates the navigation, alignment, and shared support of individual values and goals to increase care between collaborators to improve outcomes.
He is on the board of directors of Allies for Health and Wellbeing, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit providing integrated medical care, supportive human services, and community-based education for individuals living with, or at risk of, HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections. He also sits on the board of and directs the mentorships program for Steel City Volleyball League, a decades old social organization dedicated to creating spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies an opportunity to learn, play, and grow in the organized sport of recreational and competitive volleyball.
Andrew is former board Treasurer and Presidents Council Chair of AIGA, the professional association for design; he also served as the President of AIGA Pittsburgh and advisory board to AIGA Pittsburgh. He is emeritus Board of Directors for DesignInquiry, a conference-alternative design research organization. He sat on the board of FULLTIME, a Pittsburgh collaborative celebrating local creative entrepreneurship. He has written for AIGA Voice and UnderConsideration, and has had articles published internationally in DesignTaxi and AIGA Speaks, China.
Andrew’s university, college, and school service includes cultivating undergraduate research; building more engaging and belonging academic environments; community and academic responsibility; and AI ethics and creative practice.
