THE MASTER OF DESIGN (MDES) IN DESIGN FOR INTERACTIONS
The MDes is a four-semester graduate program designed for applicants with academic backgrounds in design or design-adjacent fields. It prepares you to design complex interactions across products, services, and systems.
You build advanced capability in systems thinking, futuring, speculative design, design technology, and design research, giving you the tools to address contemporary design challenges with depth and intention.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants with academic or professional experience in design process are welcome. Show readiness for graduate-level design inquiry through creative practice and project work involving material, visual, spatial, or interaction-based creation.
Backgrounds may include communication, graphic, industrial, product, environmental, interaction, service, social innovation, user-experience, user-interface, design research, and architectural design. Applicants from adjacent fields are encouraged to apply if their work demonstrates meaningful engagement with design.

THE MASTER OF ARTS (MA) IN DESIGN
The MA in Design is a two-semester, foundation-building degree for individuals with little or no prior design experience. The curriculum introduces core principles of designing for interactions through studio practice, visual communication, prototyping, and design methods. The program supports both career changers and those seeking to integrate design into an existing professional trajectory.
AT A GLANCE
- Program Length: 1 year (two semesters)
- Degree Type: Foundational design degree
- Academic Preparation: For individuals with little or no prior design experience
- Professional Experience: Full-time work experience is not required

MASTER OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (MPS) IN DESIGN FOR INTERACTIONS
This two-semester program enables MA students to expand on their prior design studies and experience, focusing on design for interactions, services, and social innovation, through coursework that aligns with the first year of the MDes program. Please note that this program is available only to eligible MA students who apply to continue their studies with the School of Design. Currently, we are not accepting outside applications to the MPS program.
PROGRAM SELECTION
If you are unsure between the MA in Design and the Master of Design (MDes) and have at least one year of full‑time work experience after your undergraduate degree, apply to the MDes and select “yes” to MA review. The committee can then consider you for either program without a separate MA application.

Submit short responses to the prompts in the Questions tab of the Program Materials section. These responses help us understand your interest in pursuing graduate study in the School of Design.
-
Upload your CV/resume that clearly outlines the location, nature, and duration of your educational and work experiences, along with any relevant accomplishments.
-
Upload your portfolio in the Documents tab in the Supporting Information section. Submit 5-9 pieces or projects showing a range of work and your interests and abilities.
Your portfolio should demonstrate design skills and knowledge (e.g., communication/graphic design, product design, industrial design, architecture). Your work should show a clear demonstration of design processes, research, iteration, critique, prototyping, and form resolution.
We evaluate portfolios from multiple viewpoints including visual/verbal communication skills, critical and analytical thinking, craftsmanship, and creativity.
Requirements:
- Submit 5–9 pieces or projects that show a range of work.
- Upload one PDF containing your 5- 9 pieces or one PDF with a URL to your portfolio website and any required passcodes.

- Upload excerpts for long works (e.g. theses, book designs, software applications) that best represent your strengths.
- Identify your role clearly for collaborative projects, including your specific contributions.
-
Upload a one-minute video via the application’s SlideRoom section that answers the following question:
Imagining that you have just completed your master’s degree in the School of Design, what do you envision as your next steps in design and what did you gain from your graduate studies that enable you to realize your goals?
You are welcome to include visuals that support your story. Keep in mind that this piece is intended to provide us with insight into who you are and what excites you, so we encourage you to be authentic and communicate clearly. Please consider the relevance and quality of any AI-generated assets in your video.

Request three letters of recommendation via the Recommendations tab in the Program Materials section.
Choose a variety of individuals who are familiar with your work. Ask each recommender to write a substantive letter addressing your qualifications for graduate study in design, including previous study, research, and professional experience.
Once you save the recommendation request, an email is sent to your recommender. Advise them to check their inbox, and spam or junk-mail folders, as these emails may be filtered.
All references submitted in this section are program specific. If you remove this program from your application, the associated letters will be deleted.
To support your recommenders, give them at least one month’s notice so they have adequate time to write and submit their letters before the deadline.

Cost to Attend
Tuition for 2026-2027 is $45,000. Each year, the admission committee awards scholarships to a few students based on the merit of their applications. Recipients receive notification of the award in their acceptance package, which provides partial tuition. You can learn about other potential sources of financial aid from CMU's Student Financial Services.
The university’s fellowship and scholarship office supports Carnegie Mellon students who are interested in pursuing external scholarships and fellowships. The office helps students to develop competitive applications, identifies and supports faculty and staff representatives for a select number of prestigious scholarships and fellowships, maintains a website for external scholarship and fellowship opportunities, and manages campus selection processes.
The School of Design assesses a $75 technology fee each semester in addition to the other yearly university fees. CMU policy requires students to have individual health insurance at approximately $3,000 per year.
For more information about tuition and other costs, please refer to the Cost of Attendance web page or email the HUB at thehub@andrew.cmu.edu.
