C Studio II: Designing Communications for Interactions: Designing Systems
Tagged as: Communications, Design for Social Innovation, Interaction Design, Service Design, Sophomore
Many people continually make formal or informal resolutions to improve aspects of their lives. Although the goals may be set by an individual relative to his or her specific situation, many of the intentions actually apply to a larger body of people. This was the case for the resolutions that the sophomore design students proposed at the start of the term. Working with topics that interested them, 2- and 3-person teams, set out to achieve their goal of designing a system that utilized various media as a means of informing and engaging their audience in ways that move them to action. They carefully crafted their messages, which included a 'catch', a call to action, and statement that validated their claims. Once solidified their concept, the students developed a visual vocabulary for their system, which they applied to all of the components. They also considered the ease at which their proposal could be realized, various modes of interaction, and how well their system would be received by their intended audience.Throughout the semester, students investigated a range of theories as they relate to designing experiences that aid learning and understanding in formal and informal settings. They created diagrams that describe the key points that they extracted from readings and discussions, the relationships among their findings, and the relevance of the principles to their design practice. The students then applied their discoveries to the design of an experience based on a topic of their choosing.
