Survey of Design: Biomimic People Mover
Tagged as: Communications, Environments, Freshman, Interaction Design, Products, Undergraduate
All of us have used objects that help us move from point A to point B. Unfortunately, the forms of objects are often determined by factors such as cost and time, with little thought given to the needs of the situations, the enjoyment of using the objects, or how they might benefit from mimicking the movement of other living things. Nonetheless, these decisions can greatly impact the quality of our lives. As a means of exploring the relationship between form and function, students created people movers out of corrugated cardboard that were inspired by a particular living thing. Their mover was required to support their body at least four inches off the ground while they moved across the rotunda that sits outside the class building. It needed to also be easy to assemble and disassemble, and were fun to watch in action. In addition, designers often use making as a way of investigating design challenges and exploring ideas. Thus, sketch modeling was an integral part of this project.
