Starting in the Fall 2023 semester, the Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design is thrilled to welcome two new faculty members - Sunki Hong and Haeyoung Kim.

A team of Master’s Students from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design were recently awarded the Student Runner Up award in the Apps & Platforms category of the Core 77 Design Awards 2023. Angela Nam (MDes ’24), Iris Cai (MPS ’23), Aishwarya Rane (MDes ’24), and Yuehui Du (MDes ’24) presented their project Ollie, a smart voice assistant for Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

Rachel Legg, a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design (BDes ’23), spent most of her final semester on the playground. Legg’s senior capstone project focused on designing a mural for the playground of Liberty Elementary in Pittsburgh, PA.

Liz McDonough, a Master of Arts in Design Alumna of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design (MA ’22), recently designed and released a line of upcycled bags through Urban Outfitters. McDonough, who currently serves as the Experiential Marketing Manager for Urban Outfitters, launched the line of bags, made from 500 square feet of used vinyl signage, on Earth Day 2023.

A team of students from Carnegie Mellon University recently placed first at the Third Coast Augmented Intelligence for Health Bowl Competition at Northwestern University this past May. “Team AIquitas,” which included Master of Design student Kate Yuwei Guo (MDes ’23), took home the first prize of $35,000 in the competition, a year-long program that involves extensive research and development of products and solutions aimed to address health disparities using AI.

This year’s MA Design cohort recently partnered with clinicians at CONVERGE (The Center for Innovative Research on Gender Health Equity at The University of Pittsburgh) to design a breastfeeding decision aid tool for women with cystic fibrosis.

Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design is honored to announce our four newest recipients of a PhD in Transition Design. Silvana Juri, Donna Maione, and Marysol Ortega Pallanez all successfully defended their doctoral theses in April 2023.

A team of four graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design recently won three prestigious awards for their project, “Beyond,” a mixed reality museum experience.

School of Design alumna Annalisa Pao (BDes ‘22) was recently selected to present her research on decolonizing design at the 2023 Conference on Design Principles and Practices.
