Graduate scholarships

The university’s Fellowships and Scholarships Office provides support to Carnegie Mellon graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing external scholarships and fellowships. The office works with students to help them develop competitive applications, identifies and supports faculty and staff representatives for a select number of prestigious scholarships and fellowships, maintains a website of external scholarship and fellowship opportunities, and manages campus selection processes. One specific scholarship opportunity is the Teresa Heinz Scholars for Environmental Research program. Working with respected academic institutions, the program seeks to:

  • Enrich the public’s understanding of emerging environmental issues
  • Provide effective solutions for environmental problems
Specifically, the program provides enhancement support for doctoral dissertation and master’s thesis (or project) research. A total of 16 one-time, one-year awards are offered annually: eight $10,000 awards for doctoral dissertation support and eight $5,000 awards for master’s thesis support. Funded research must have public policy relevance that increases society’s understanding of environmental concerns and proposed solutions. Individuals with dissertations or theses or projects that do not meet these criteria will not be considered. Students at Carnegie Mellon University, one of only eight schools, are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

A panel of environmental experts selected by the foundation provides recommendations on the selection of scholars. Click to the Heinz Family Philanthropies webpage on this scholarship for additional information and application instructions.
