10 Disruptive Trends in Design

From products created and expressed as memes, to shifts in the nature of creativity and authorship, to the Internet of Things, there are significant changes in the way product design is manifesting itself in contemporary culture. Many of these changes point to shifts in what the purpose of an artifact actually is, and help us to understand the role of designed objects in a service economy. This talk will look at some of the trends happening in product design, and how their mutations can inform the design of larger systems and services.
About Allan Chochinov
Allan Chochinov is a partner at Core77, a New York-based design network which supports the global design community through both online and offline initiatives. He serves as the editor-in-chief of Core77.com, one of the most widely read design websites in the world, Coroflot.com design jobs and portfolios, and DesignDirectory.com design firm database.
Prior to Core77, his work in product design focused on the medical and diagnostic fields, as well as on consumer products and workplace systems. (Projects included work for Herman Miller, Johnson & Johnson, Federal Express, Kodak, A.C. Nielsen, Oral-B, Crunch Fitness and others.) He is associate professor at New York’s Pratt Institute, where he teaches in the Graduate Industrial Design Department. He has been named on numerous design and utility patents, and has received awards from I.D. Magazine, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club and The One Club.
He received a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, and a Masters of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute.
