While we don’t have all of them yet, we have posted many of the presentations.

We’re still processing the podcasts.

What People Are Saying About the Emergence Conference

September 12th, 2007 by Jamin Hegeman

We’re happy to see that the conference stimulated those who attended and inspired some to write up their thoughts on their own blogs.

Of note, Core77’s Allan Chochinov, who presented at the conference, posted a nice writeup complete with photos.

Todd Wilkens from Adaptive Path’s talk–”The End of Products”–was near to our hearts. Building the argument for ecosystems rather than products, he talked about the need for less service design than a “service mindset,” concluding with the admonition: “I hope we’re nearing the end of the product design mindset.” —Allan

Adaptive Path’s Alexa Andrzejewski, a conference attendee, wrote The Meaning of Service Design on the Adaptive Path blog.

By the end of the conference, the push to define “service design” seemed increasingly meaningless. As CMU’s Richard Buchanan concluded in his powerful closing keynote, “Did anyone find a definition of service design? I didn’t find one, and I am not bothered by that. Defining disciplines lacks value. Instead, we should ask ourselves, ‘What is the RESULT of service design? What industries does it touch? What is its deeper purpose?” —Alexa

Here are some other quotes and posts from other attendees…

Viegas & Wattenberg really started this conference off with a bang. I could have left after their speech and gone home happy. —emilysquared

Keith Instone summarizes many of the first day presentations.

Carrie Chan also provides a review of every session she attended.

One of the big pushes coming out of the conference was to start continuing the conversations we’ve had over the past three days so that we don’t just convene every once in a while to talk about what we’ve done and instead start tackling problems and pushing through ideas together. —Carrie Chan

What should Emergence be about next year?

September 9th, 2007 by Jamin Hegeman

While the conference is still fresh in your minds, we’d like to hear what you think next year’s conference should be about? Can we continue to explore service design? Is there another emerging design trend to consider? Can the conference be service design and something else? Would you come if it wasn’t service design?
