September 8–10, 2006, Pittsburgh

A transdisciplinary conference where emergent themes and practices in design are explored and fostered

Emergence 2006

The inaugural Emergence Conference, an international design forum hosted by the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, was held on September 8–10, 2006.

Service Design

Emergence 2006 will focused on service design. This emerging area spans many disciplines, from design and business to technology and the social sciences, and is relevant both in academia and the professional world.

Workshop

A workshop with two leaders in the field provided a hands-on introduction to designing for service.

Speakers

The 13 conference talks featured speakers from three continents discussing state-of-the-art work, ranging from case studies highlighting customer-focused service design to innovative theoretical frameworks. Industries such as energy, financial services, health care, and retail were explored. New approaches were proposed that cull from design theory, human-computer interaction practices, and computing infrastructure considerations.

Closing Panel

The conference concluded with a panel discussing the future of service design.
